I think there is technology and there is tech. The kind of backlash against overarching, almost authoritarian, certainly centralizing technological solutions are symbolized by the English words, “Big Tech,” but just like math is not mathematics, as my primary school teacher would tell me. “Tech” is not technology. “Tech” is just one small part of the entire technology scene. For example, “tech” would not include open space technology, dynamic facilitation, and non-violent communication, but these are all social technologies. Democracy itself is a social technology, but it is not included as “tech.” So, I think really the idea to move away from tech solutionism is to actually bring about the social technologies to the forefront.
